The Ruby Knight was written by David Eddings. It is book 2 in the series The Elenium. I really enjoy David Eddings books. They have a classical and timeless style. These are books I read as a teenager and also encouraged my teenagers to read.
As we catch up to our hero, Sir Sparhawk, his Queen Ehlana, is still encased in the diamond throne that is sustaining her life from a near fatal poisoning. The living enchantment was created and is sustained by the lives of 11 knights and Sephrenia, his mystic tutor in the arts of magic.
